Last week was National Tree Planting Week and to celebrate The Mayday Team together with colleagues from Business in the Community braved the cold on Tuesday to support one of BITC's Award partners, the Woodland Trust, in their plan to create an 858 acre woodland in the Heartwood Forest in Herfordshire with 600,000 newly planted trees. Located near Sandridge just three miles north of St Albans in Hertfordshire, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform the site into the largest new continuous native forest in England.
This project is very dear to Mayday's heart. Incredibly, it takes just 12 years to turn bare land into flourishing native woodland, complete with a diverse range of wildlife and towering trees. The site contains four small remnants (44 acres) of precious ancient woodland, our equivalent of the rainforest, which now sadly makes up only two per cent of UK landcover. Large areas of woodland are better than small fragments in helping species adapt in the face of climate change.
We managed to plant nearly 800 trees and it was a really great team bonding day. We also used it as a trial run for next year when we want to get as many Mayday members as possible to join us on an annual Mayday tree planting day.
There is still time for your organisation to have their day in the snow and attend the Weekly work parties at Heartwood Forest One day per week a group of local volunteers get together to carry out tree planting at Heartwood and organisation and businesses are encouraged to bring their teams along to help out.
The following dates are planned for the rest of the planting season: December 16th and 21st January 6th, 14th, 21st and 27th February 3rd, 10th, 15th and 25th March 3rd, 9th, 18th, 22nd and 30th

This sounds like an excellent project which was by no means small scale, a large amount of trees planted..! It would be very interesting to hear what research was done regarding species selection, how the project was funded directly and whether similar projects are proposed. Thanks again. |

The project was done through the Woodland Trust and they gave us a lot of in depth information about the type of trees we planted. They are a great organisation. For more information visit their website www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
