We were delighted to attend the 2011 Shell Springboard Awards this week. It was inspiring to meet and learn about some of the most innovative small businesses in the UK. Our friends at The Carbon Trust tell us that the global market for low carbon goods and services, which is already worth over £3 trillion, is expected to exceed £4.5 trillion by 2015, with the UK market the sixth largest in the world. It’s no surprise then that nearly 200 small businesses from across the UK entered the Shell Springboard awards this year.

2011 is shaping up to be a huge year for low carbon business. 2010 finished on a high note with world leaders returning to the UNFCCC international treaty framework. This gives us all a strong indication that there will be a global treaty and so national legislation limiting carbon emissions is likely to follow. This is a strong incentive for companies not taking action to get cracking and will give a huge boost to the leading companies that have already begun cutting their emissions and changing their business models in preparation for the low carbon economy.

The issue of whether the spending cuts announced by the coalition government are the right response to our current economic situation is likely to be hugely divisive. Whatever your position it is clear that the hundreds of thousands of job losses will cause much anguish up and down the country and clearly many services will be affected. From an environmental point of view cuts to DECC, DEFRA and to government funded entities like the Carbon Trust and WRAP will reduce the UK’s capacity, in the short term, to take action on environmental challenges.
