Carbon Masters Programme

The Mayday Network is convened by Business in the Community (BITC). The programme listed below is run by Scottish Business in the Community and is helping  Mayday members to take action along specific stages of the Mayday Journey towards a sustainable future. We hope you’ll get involved.

Carbon Masters Project - Linking Carbon masters students with SMEs who need carbon measurement and reduction help.

Research suggests that many small and medium sized business (SMEs) are not taking advantage of the benefits attached to measuring and monitoring their energy use. Feedback the Mayday Network has received suggests that this is primarily due to a lack of resource and a lack of funds.

In light of this, this project, collaboration between Scottish Business in the Community’s environmental programme, The Prince’s Mayday Network, and the University of Edinburgh’s Msc in Carbon Management, will aim to circumvent these challenges for small businesses by providing the resource to enable active measurement of the businesses’ carbon footprint.

What’s in it for the business?

It will provide small businesses with the resource, knowledge and expertise to measure and then manage their energy use with the ultimate purpose of reducing their carbon footprint.

What’s in it for the students?

It will provide Msc students at the University of Edinburgh with practical knowledge of the processes, challenges and opportunities relating to environmental responsibilities within a business.

How much time does it take?

It will take approximately half a day to collate the data required for the students visit. Details of what is needed, and how best to collate this, will be provided beforehand. The students visit will take approximately one day, at the end of which they will present you with a simple carbon footprint, as well as an action plan that can be sued to reduce this, thereby saving money.

Does it cost anything to take part?

No, although a contribution based on potential savings that would be reinvested in environmental projects would be encouraged.

Feedback.

‘Just wanted to say a quick thanks for the time effort and commitment you put into completing the Carbon Audit for 525 Ferry Road, this is a great piece of work and something we will use going forward as a template for assessing our footprint across other offices.’ Steven Thomson, Environmental Manager - State Street.

‘The collaboration of the MSc in Carbon Management at Edinburgh University with the Carbon Trust and SBC has provided out Carbon Masters with a wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on expertise in carbon measurement, reporting and verification. These are precisely the kinds of skills required by both business and government in the push towards achieving a low carbon Scotland.’ Dr Dave Reay, Senior Lecturer in Carbon Management - Edinburgh University
