Anglian Water - Bank of America Merrill Lynch Climate Change Award Winner

Introduction

Climate change represents a serious challenge for all water
companies, but particularly for Anglian Water. The region
receives the lowest amount of rainfall in the country and has
an extensive and low-lying coastline that is vulnerable to the
effects of climate change.

Process

Relevance:

Anglian Water is one of the largest energy users in the East of England.
Energy use accounts for 17% of operating costs and 90% of its carbon
emissions are attributable to the consumption of electricity, gas and
fuel oil.

What and How:

The mitigation activities have been brought together under ‘Drop CO2’
which forms part of the long-term visionary campaign and business
strategy: ‘Love Every Drop’. This communication and behavioural change
campaign brings all stakeholders and customers together to put water at
the heart of a new way of sustainable living.
Drop CO2 drives reductions in carbon emissions and power costs through
the delivery of energy efficiency projects: reducing the carbon in the
capital investment programme and in the supply chain; developing their
own renewable power; reducing transport emissions; and measuring,
managing and reducing process emissions. In addition, Anglian Water
is helping their customers to deliver water and carbon effi ciencies.

Impact

In the first four years, saved over £11 million in energy costs against a target of £10 million

Over 50GWh saved equating to 27,000 tonnes of CO2

In 2010, Anglian Water cut electricity use for the fourth year running

Savings in electricity from their energy initiative amounted to 9 GWh or 5,000
tonnes of CO2
