“The changes we are likely to see to our society and environment over the next two decades and beyond will require a paradigm shift in the economy and society. The companies that recognise and plan for it now will be the winners of the future. We need to think now about how business services will evolve in the next two decades, opportunities are real for those who help create a sustainable future.”

The previous sections of the journey guide you through a process of incrementally changing your business. By measuring and reporting emissions, putting in place management procedures and reducing emissions your company can become more efficient and pollute less. However, for most companies using this approach it will be very hard to get past emissions reductions of about 20%.
As the science of global warming becomes more established the scale of change has been revealed. Reductions in emissions of at least 80% will be required by 2050. This kind of change cannot happen through incremental change, it requires new thinking and new business models. As leading companies in the network have shown, this shift is not only possible but highly desirable.
Transforming your company to be sustainable ensures that it will still be of value tomorrow. Transformation requires adapting to a changing world; and innovating for new markets. This section is being developed in partnership with the network. We aim to answer the question 'what will sustainable business look like in 2050? And work in partnership with member companies to get there.
If you would like to pursue this in more detail BITC’s visioning programme helps boards – your board – understand this world. What are the biggest issues we to need to start solving right now, and what are the opportunities? The programme will help you understand what will change, what this means for your business, and what actions you need to be taking right now.
