Mayday member powerPerfector recently won the award for ‘Low Carbon Product’ of the year at the Green Business Awards 2010. They beat tough competition including Dyson's airblade, BOC and Clear Channel.
powerPerfector is a UK company that installs voltage power optimisation – a technology developed in Japan which converts a building’s electricity supply to the optimum level. Power in the UK is supplied at 242 Volts even though most of the electrical equipment that we use operates most efficiently at EU levels of 220V. The technology was brought into the UK by powerPerfector’s CEO Angus Robertson. He saw the potential for the technology in the UK market and he was right. The company now employs 100 people and is at number 33 in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 companies.
The popularity of the product amongst major UK businesses comes down to the product’s proven ability to reduce electricity consumption by up to 20%, it also protects against power spikes and suppresses harmonics that can damage sensitive electrical equipment. Furthermore payback after installation is particularly rapid, taking only two to four years.
Major retailer Tesco was one of the first companies to purchase the technology and ASDA has followed. Angus comments that: “We are increasing the penetration of the market place and are looking very much to the macro opportunity for UK plc to get it out there as quickly as we can. We believe that 90% of businesses in the UK have an opportunity to have their power quality improved. To date we have produced average savings of around 13% in energy and carbon output for all our clients.”
The fact that DECC has installed powerPerfector technology into 3 Whitehall Place and that DEFRA’s London Headquarters Nobel House have also been “powerPerfected” is a loud statement that this technology works.
powerPerfector is an active member of the Mayday Network and they are certainly walking the talk in terms of the way they run the company. Their employees are all very passionate about the environment and they have active environmental committees that ensure environmental standards are adhered to internally. They also have strict supplier selection criteria and have powerPerfected their premises in Paddington, London, even though they are only renting. In February 2010, the company became one of the first in the country to be awarded with the new BSI energy management standard - BS EN 16001 for best practice in cutting energy costs and reducing carbon emissions. We are proud to have such an innovative company in the Network.
