HRH Prince Charles has issued a video message for world leaders in the run up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio later this week. The Prince criticised the failure of the global community to act on global sustainability issues such as climate change, and called on policy makers to make a concerted effort "before it is finally too late."
The first UN earth summit took place in Rio twenty years ago. The event put several issues that are now widely understood, including climate change, on the map. This week from 20-22 June, the Rio UN Conference on Sustainable Development will look at sustainability more holistically, and consider the links between for example sustainable development and poverty eradication.
Business in the Community is encouraging its members to become leaders in sustainability by embedding new innovation and transformational thinking into core business processes; placing a financial value on the natural capital they currently use for free and working towards long term business models that can sustain the projected population of 9 billion people in 2050. This is a challenge and opportunity for businesses of all sizes. Case studies demonstrating best practice from businesses on this journey can be found here.
