The Prince’s Business Emergency Recovery Group ( BERG)

Background

Events such as the 2009 Cumbria floods and 2010 snows highlight the potential for major disruption to lives and livelihoods from severe weather in the UK.  Other non-weather emergencies (such as the insolvency of the milk processing co-operative in 2009) are often less visible, yet still seriously affect local communities and economies

During his visit to Cumbria in the immediate aftermath of the November 2009 floods, HRH The Prince of Wales saw for himself the positive impact larger businesses were able to have in helping the local community and smaller businesses recover after the event, often working alongside and in support of the emergency services and other response and support agencies.

Recognising this important facilitating role, HRH The Prince of Wales has established the Business Emergency Recovery Group (BERG) with the aim of achieving quick and co-ordinated mobilisation of support from business leaders in this way.

Aim of BERG

BERG will use the expertise and influence of a small group of leaders to:

  • Quickly identify blockages which hinder business and local community getting back on their feet after an emergency and help remove these blockages to facilitate rapid recovery;
  • Harness the power of BITC’s wider membership and wider stakeholder network in supporting local businesses and communities to achieve long-term, sustainable recovery;
  • Provide advice and guidance, based on experience, to help businesses better prepare for and recover from emergencies in the future.
