Sustainability is a big idea. At its most basic it is about people and communities, and about giving them a great life. Whilst community projects, wellbeing and strong economies are the real delivery of modern and satisfying lives - a strong, healthy, natural environment is key. This is at many levels: from provision of food, water and clean air; to the more subtle but essential pleasant environment to relax in and enjoy. A poor environment means a poor economy, and it is logical to assume the opposite is true.

Britain has significant entrepreneurial potential, especially in the low carbon sector. Yet a number of barriers impede rapid business growth. Government support for green initiatives has proved inconsistent demonstrated most recently through the FiT fiasco and the questionably ‘green’ budget. Conditions now appear increasingly unfavourable for SMEs who face a funding deficit of up to £190m over the next 5 years. The UK film industry contributes £4.5 billion to the Economy. It’s also responsible for an estimated 500,000 tonnes of carbon a year. Producers, cameramen and gaffers (film electricians) would like to be green, but a lack of affordable alternatives to power-hungry incandescent film lights make this difficult.

In the past few years, through my work with the Commonwealth Orchard, I’ve has been encouraging planting of trees and orchards across Scotland, and I’m delighted to be able to say that it’s an idea that is literally now, bearing fruit. Over the past days I’ve picked my first plum of the season, (an Early Rivers, and the apples and other fruit seem to be coming on well.
